Child

Reading/Math/English Tutorials
Specialized instruction in Reading/Math/English, participants are monitored with pretest and posttests.

Homework Club
Component to enhance student study skills. Participants performance is tracked by teacher/parent contacts, Interim Reports, and Report Cards. Incentives for participants include snacks and field trips.

Art Appreciation
Course is designed to instruct participants in various forms of art which include ceramics, wood sculpturing, water color painting, and sewing.

Music
Volunteers assist participants with music theory, history, and voice. Skills are learned and shared with other groups, parents, staff. The goal is for participants to form a Dakota Center Choir.

Computer Skills
Basic and Intermediate computer skills are taught to participants of the After-School program through learning keyboarding, playing educational games, and specialized subjects.

Reading/Math Proficiency Preparation (4-6-9 Grades)
The computerized proficiency preparation course for Reading/Math is reviewed with participants for 5 weeks. Test is administered upon completion of review.

Youth Nutrition/4-H
(Five Rivers Metro Park/Wegerzyn Garden Center)
A basic nutrition course which includes a review of the food pyramid. Also food preparation, menu selection, and food shopping are offered to participants. Youth participate in seasonal classes in the garden with food preparation.

Drill/Dance/Percussion Program
Award winning program is designed to instruct participants through precision performance. Also develops participants character and motivates self esteem. The Drill and Percussion program are seasonal with Dance participants active in winter/spring months.

General Recreation
After-School recreation is an optional program for participants who have completed homework assignments or not interested in attending other classes.

First Job Training
A specialized five week job training course designed to prepare 15-19 yr. Students an experience with first time employment. Taped mock interviews, computer resume preparation, on-the-site interviews are included in the program curriculum.

Specialized Programs

Karate
(Tang So Doo) Master Frank Jones, Master Bruce Dance, and Master James Goodlow)
Basic – Intermediate – Advanced skills of self defense and the art of discipline are taught to students. Tests are administered for qualification of titles.

Tennis
Edward Lewis (N.J.T.L. Instructor, Grassroots Tennis Association)
Tennis skills and principals are taught to participants to prepare for team building and competition. Spring Season is offered from March through June, with Summer course beginning in July and ending in September.

Beginner & Intermediate Basketball (3rd-4th Grade)
Basic skills are given to participants in preparation for competition with City of Dayton Recreation Leagues and Tri-State Leagues.

Computer Clubhouse
Wright Computer Connection
A specialized course in computer art and design, principals, and components. Students acquire abilities to utilize Microsoft Office Package and Desktop Publisher.

Dakota Center Community Garden and the Garden Angel Program
The Dakota Community Garden, a collaborative project with Five Rivers Metro Parks/Wegerzyn Garden Center offers youth an opportunity to see first hand where their food comes from. gain skills, witness the cycles of nature, begin a lifelong health hobby and learn cooperation as they join in the harvest and have a great time! The Garden Angel Program is a home-garden assistance project which partners a youth with an elderly neighbor. This program will employ 4-6 part-time youth and will begin in the Spring of 2003.

Scouting
Tabernacle Baptist Church
The Dakota Center in collaboration with Tabernacle Baptist Church offers opportunities for young men with the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. Weekly meetings are held every Saturday at Tabernacle Baptist Church with special activities at the Dakota Center.

Adult Programs

Computer Instruction
OCCN and EFX-DOS
Basic – Intermediate – Advanced computer instruction funded through the Ohio Community Computer Network. Participants are taught computer skills, technical tools, and hard-drive components and repair by EFX-DOS.

GED Preparation
Edgemont Community Center and the Dayton Urban League
Staff from the Edgemont Community Center will instruct basic GED classes for residents located in the MacFarlane and Wolfcreek neighborhoods.

Men’s Winter/Summer Basketball
Men 25 yrs + are encouraged to participate in basketball leagues sponsored by the Dakota Center.

 

Seniors

“The Golden Age Club”
A program designed for seniors 55+ encourages participants to gather and explore age related activities. Members can create art projects, sew, read, participate in nutritional and health related workshops.

Cyber Seniors
Wright Computer Connection
Basic – Intermediate – Advance computer instruction funded through the Ohio Community Computer Network and SBC Ameritech to encourage senior participants to explore the world of cyber technology.
